Cheikh Amadou Bamba, Mandela, Ghandi, Dr King, and countless others all operated within very hostile environments, and they still managed to win their battles.
Good letter and good response. I raised my two boys in a community rich in culture and social consciousness, with no to little support from their father. My convictions were such, that I showed them how I spent hours upon hours in law libraries, researching domestic law, attending school with women's emotional support, fought for equitable rights and made my child collect a free lunch at school (which scorned him, evidently and humiliated him in front of his friends). I made Christmas gifts. I supported small local guilds. At home, we ate whole nourishing foods and my plate was the last one to be filled. I pushed food to their plates and acted as though I was full. Of, course.. I wanted to be sure they were filled up first. My boys became the most loving, respectful, responsible fathers, husbands, human beings I could have imagined. they weren't always my friend. I wasn't always theirs. I did my job. I raised two socially conscious charitable-minded men. Then I opened my own business...a retail shop with its roots in social consciousness. and I called it, WHOA! NELLIE. Think. That's the hidden theme everywhere within this store. Think. Examine where we have been and consider where we are heading. Think.
